Please let terry schiavo die.....in peace

I was undecided about this issue a few days back, but now I have come to a conclusion. It is better to let her die, sooner the better. If she has been in a vegetative state with no chance of recovering(assuming that's what doctors have said), then she should be let to die. I see no morality issue here. Everyday we see people die and not all of them die of fate or natural cause, but due to human neglect. I see no conservative/right wing organization coming to streets in arms against children dying in asian or africa which are explicitly and clearly due to human neglect. It does not matter what government, which country-life is life everywhere. All these conservatives who fight for terry's life saying that it is against God/religion etc, should probably stop with eating just enough food to sustain themselves, be strictly disciplined so as not to have any pleasures in life and donate all the money for the pro-life cause, say to african/asian/poor children everywhere in the world. Think it is going to happen....in my dreams, hardly. These people are so full of prejudice and hypocrisy.

Stupid me

I started my day today being really stupid. My friend had gone to a conference and came back with one of those badges you can stick on the bags. He gave it to me or rather pinned it on my back-pack. I said I wont have it because "We engineers dont respect science a lot so cant have it". Soooo dumb and unrefined of me. Actually it did not come out the way I wanted. I sincerely dont mean any disrespect for sciences. What I actually meant was that everyone in my engineering would give "Oh! what is that?" kind of look and inquire about it. You know what I mean....So, really felt saying very bad saying that. so many times we say things which we dont mean and feel completely stupid.

To feed or not to feed

If doctors feels terry schiavo is in a vegetative state then she is. If they also say she cannot come back to her normal life, then I would believe them. It is stupid to question doctors on morality only when it comes to death and not appreciate them when it is otherwise. However, what should be done to this lady and so many others like her. I dont know. I am indifferent because somehow inviting death when life could be sustained, even if it done artificially is something I find a little hard to digest. But on the otherhand, to be in a vegetative state with no prospect of ever being a person again is something equally hard to digest. If I were to ever go into that state, I hope they dont have a feeding tube for me (definitely not for 15 years). So, like I said I am indifferent or rather not sure. Going stlightly off track, I always find right wing conservatives/republicans/pro-life etc really amusing and entertaining. It is true we dont have the right to take our lives, but then if that ideal is based on crap like "God have life, man can't take it" etc., all I can do is to have a good laugh. There are billion ways to cherish life. Definitely terry shiavo is not one of them. From my purely vegetarian point of view, I can equally claim that killing animals for eating is equally bad and against life (I am personally not against anybody who is not a vegetarian....just a logical point of view). Also for americans, eating horse, dogs, rats, cats etc is something they cannot do, either because they are pets or not worth eating. Too much of prejudice.

Well, if anybody out there accidently barge into my blog, this is for you. Squeeze your brains.

$ THE MISSING DOLLAR RIDDLE $

Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????

Think I need a break

Well, it cannot get closer than this to blasphemy. I just had my spring break. There are too many problems for me to face and think about, that if every other second is a break, I might make it. Only now I realize what is an up-hill task is. The going is difficult but the worst part is to not break and sit down. If I sucessfully complete this masters, it will be the most difficult and trying part of my life so far. There is this constant nag in the mind about the uncertainity of future, pressure to perform well in courses and research and take care of other responsibilities. I constantly fight between the irritation that "I can go only so far" and the need to "Keep moving". There are so many times I feel I should drop everything and go back. Not sure why I am unable to do it. To me, I have set this deadline. Just one more year- next spring.

Visa rejection to modi

The Visa rejection to modi is quite unfortunate. Personally I believe he should be behind bars for instigating religious riots. However, the grounds for his visa rejections make me quite uncomfortable. I dont think US is going to reject visa to any saudi prince eventhough no other religion other than islam can be practised in saudi. Further, as Prime minister Manmohan singh has put it, it is not for US to decide upon a constitutionally elected representative of a state to be fit or not to enter US. But, at this point I am quite confused. A country can or cannot let anyone enter its borders and that is it's sovereign right. But also, convention demands that, a constitutional head be not barred except under rare circumstances. So, this is a picky issue.

Movie reviews
The Legend of suryothai (thailand) The film is about a young princess who goes about sacrificing everything and ultimately herself for the betterment of the country. I am not actually impressed by the character in itself, but I definitely liked the way movie moved. There were no dramatic scenes, no blundering/thundering armies grossly out of proportion from the real tale etc. The no nonsense aproach to the movie probably made it quite nice to watch. About the character of suryothai, not that her life was not an inspiration, but since I am used to seeing over dramatized characters in historical movies that her plain beauty and simple nuances seem to pale when compared to others. But contradicting to what I said just now, I like her probably because of that.
Ran (by Akira Kurasawa)
Before I go to the movie even, I should say this guy is master story teller. Firstly, the movie should not be seen for entertainment. Its genre is totally different. We basically need a no popcorn-no phone call-no friend bickering kind of atmosphere to see this movie. Every scene has depth with a profound thought process behind it. The last scene is really an eye opener where taramaru (who is blind) stands on the edge of a crevice with none to help him. He holds on to a picture of buddha with half belief that it will save him. All his relatives are dead and so also his enemies. The great clans have fallen, their castles burning and the land destroyed. Taramaru is blissfully unawre of all this, hoping that his sister(who was decapitated) would find him soon. Seems like he personifies humanity, blind, with half the faith in things which we think might save us and not yet realizing the potential danger we are in, yet blissfully unaware of everything around us and foolishly hoping for better times to return. I am not a cynical person, but, if the effort does not come from us, we will forever be like taramaru.

Regarding shakti kapoor

This is a really funny incident. It is funny because media is portraying bollywood as bad and bollywood accusing media of prying into personal lives and staging. First of all, how many of you insane people think the bollywood moguls are chaste and have strict codes for conduct. Second of all, does the media think it is playing good Samaritan and protecting the "so called" India culture. Whether it is staged or not, anybody in bollywood could have slept with anybody for favors. That is the stark reality and I am not ashamed of the actors/actresses for it. Media is no better. It thrives on the filth of bollywood. Finally, there is this one huge and important participant in all this we generally pay little attention to. The general public. Everybody who reads this news about shakti kapoor thinks he is a worst villain and they themselves stand the right to scrutinize this issue because of their moral uprightness, however, every single time a reader of the general public reads with undying interest about a girl raped somewhere, people killed, someone's wife eloping with someone else's husband or in this case, some actor/actress "going around" with someone else....it is all contributing to the growth of the same paparazzi that apparently killed Princess Diana. So, lets just cut the crap and go back to doing what we do best....bitch about the rest of the world.

Other trivial stuff!!!!

Got over my first midterm and not sure how well I did, but definitely have understood subject very well. Need to talk to venkat about some VLSI concepts.
Trying to go to GYM everyday and lose weight(currently only 168lb...hurray!!!) Target - 160lb end of this semester.
Definitely gym going (or coming???) amru girls are good looking.
Almost sure that the telugu girl in VLSI class has some special interest in me (or me on her!!!)- blah....she is the one consistently sits next me, not me....however not interested in anything particular (you know me....kazhuvera meenule nazhuvure meenu naan....:-)
Dad's health is exactly not good and exactly not bad.....guess that is how things are going to be.
Definitely have to talk to bons this week.....she must be thinking I am really a villain. Meena however was quite clever...tricked me into talking to her.
Got to call for my sister's b'day on march 15th.
Saw the hindi movie "Raincoat" starring ash and ajay. A very well made movie, another version of gift of maggie. But very sad and moving. Ash was simply NOT ravishing. She was as homely as it could get. But not convinced that villages are inherently better than cities. Most of the writers, film directors or others have this notion. But, I guess if I turn back into their history, all of them must have come from villages, hence have a nostalgic attachment to the villages. From my side, for all I curse, there is no better place than chennai to me in the whole wide world. I have my memories there, which probably the only sure thing we can always cherish.

How to end poverty?

I am deeply moved and concerned by this article, "How to end poverty? " in Time magazine. For once, the magazine from its republican/Bush/conservative/Christian outlook decided to look into something worthwhile.
Facts:
8 million people die each year because they are too poor to survive
Nearly half of Africa's population lives in extreme poverty
More than 1 million African children die of malaria every year
$500 billion USD spent on war on terrorism - $16 billion USD spent on poverty around the world....wondering what is important??!!!
Nearly 50% of the world's population is poor

I am astounded by these facts. As a species, I considered that we were definitely a success. However, I am rethinking my position on that. If we as humanbeings are incapable of feeding our people, taking care of our young or refuse to consider that every other human being is poor, then may be we were not really as successful as I thought. what is more amazing is the line of thought the author has supposed - that poverty is not a direct result of mismanagement, corruption and authoritative rule. Instead it is more likely that it is a product of geography, climate and natural resources. Eventhough I dont agree with him completely, I still believe he is largely true in what he says. Long back I have read somewhere that it only takes one year of all the money Americans spend on pets to take care of clean drinking water requirements for the entire African continent or just one year equivalent of dollars what American women spend is all required to give the entire African continent's women, some kind of decent education. Though the facts may be wrong, they may not be off the mark completely. This probably gives an idea of where the priorities are. However, I refuse to acknowledge that the rich should curtail its spendings and give more to poor, just because they are rich and the latter receive, just because they are poor. More likely, the rich of world should take active part in helping the needy to empower them to help themselves. Education, healthcare and employment are the fundamental three aspects which can destroy poverty. I think if every able and capable human being to realizes that even a little effort on one's side to erradicate poverty, will go a long way in ending this menance.

Quite naturally pissed!!!

Friday night my friends wanted to go to pub and well...get drunk. I don't find any fault with that. They invited me knowing that I won't drink. Ofcourse, they didnot expect me to drink but just to accompany them. I was reading a book (my idea of peaceful friday nights!!!). Well this one guy says that I should know the whole new another world out there when I refused to come. Now what the heck was that. Lot of people might think there is nothing wrong with what he said. I dont think so. I dont need this quasi-patronizing-you-dumb-nerd kind of look at me. I am at peace with myself and enjoy doing whatever I do. You dont need to tell me that my lifestyle is not upto the mark as you see fit. When someone politely refuses, leave the issue at that. What is this uncontrollable need to force it on others.....you doing charity? Would really appreciate if I ask you watch 3 hours of anime with me. Not really right. So, people, just stop messing around with me. Mind your own $%@!^&* business.
