Kamalini

My new niece henceforth shall be called "Kamalini". Though it sounds like devayani's name in kadhaal kottai, it is sort of cute. Interestingly we dont have this name in our family so should be different.
Other happenings:
I need to call india today.
I need to send a card to my periyamma for her marraige thingy they celebrate at 60 yrs.
I need to go for a health check up.
I am in a sort of quagmire situation now. If I solve it I will be settled for the near future (like next 5 years!).

And I need to stop cribbing. :-(

My brother nikhil - movie

I saw this movie today. One of the best movies I had seen oflate. I read that this movie was about gays, but actually this movie is about AIDS and society's indifference to it. A very sad and disturbing movie.

Water closet and British lady

Some of you might have read this already but then this is too hilarious. Personaly i dont entertain forwards, but read this. It will definitely make you laugh.

Its very funnyThis is to provide some comic relief........You justcan't stop laughing for every single sentence in theletter below. In the days when you couldn't count on a public toiletfacility, an English woman was planning a trip toIndia. She was registered to stay in a small guesthouse owned by the local schoolmaster. She was concerned as to whether the guest housecontained a WC. In England, a bathroom is commonlycalled a WC which stands for "Water Closet". She wroteto the schoolmaster inquiring of the facilities aboutthe WC.The school master, not fluent in English, asked thelocal priest if he knew the meaning of WC. Togetherthey pondered possible meanings of the letters andconcluded that the lady wanted to know if there was a"Wayside Chapel" near the house . . . a bathroom never entered their minds. So the schoolmaster wrote the following reply:
Dear Madam,I take great pleasure in informing you that the WC islocated 9 miles from the house. It is located in themiddle of a grove of pine trees, surrounded by lovelygrounds. It is capable of holding 229 people and isopen on Sundays and Thursdays. As there are manypeople expected in the summer months, I suggest youarrive early. There is, however, plenty of standingroom. This is an unfortunate situation especially ifyou are in the habit of going regularly. It may be of some interest to you that my daughter wasmarried in the WC as it was there that she met herhusband. It was a wonderful event. There were 10people in every seat. It was wonderful to see theexpressions on their faces. We can take photos indifferent angle. My wife, sadly, has been ill andunable to go recently. It has been almost a year sinceshe went last, which pains her greatly. You will be pleased to know that many people bringtheir lunch and make a day of it. Others prefer towait till the last minute and arrive just in time. Iwould recommend your ladyship plan to go on a Thursdayas there is an organ accompaniment. The acoustics are excellent and even the most delicate sounds can beheard everywhere. The newest addition is a bell which rings every time aperson enters. We are holding a bazaar to provideplush seats for all since many feel it is long needed.
I look forward to escorting you there myself andseating you in a place where you can be seen by all.
With deepest regards,
The Schoolmaster
The Woman fainted reading the reply........and she never visited India !!!!

Starvation in India

I should admit that I was naive enough to believe that starvation related deaths were mainly focused in Africa (Ethiopia, Sudan etc). Only after reading the BBC news on starvation in tea gardens I realize the difference between haves and have nots. Only yesterday I saw that India is the 10th largest economy. I don't know what to say now when I see both the news items together. Bharathiyar said, "Thaniyoru manidhanuku vunavilleyel indha jagathinai azhithiduvom". Immediately I wanted to blame the politicians, indifferent officials and apathetic tea garden owners, but is this problem so simple? Do I not have some responsibility, even indirectly? I dont know. Sometimes ignorance is a bliss.

Puzzle me and sister used to play

I and my sister used to play this game when we were kids. It was semi translation cum thanglish version of some thamizh sentence. The one I remember goes like this,

"Son who temple salt flour needle gone"

Anybody got any guess...

confused!

I was talking with my roomie yesterday. The talk was about what we would want to do in future and stuff. It was interesting to note that we did not have a clear cut idea about what we want in the future. Yes, we are confident of making lot of money , etc, etc...but like where do i want to settle down. I definitely dont like all aspects of US culture. But even the four years i have spent in US have made it unacceptable for me settle down in India. Dont mistake me I do love my country, my family and everything. But I want the best of both. Hmmm..seems too greedy but that the truth. The famous word "ABCD-American Born confused Desi"...probably fits more to people like me..."ABCD-American Bred Confused Desi"....

She broke up with me

She refused to work with me.
She was constantly giving that blank stare.
She refused to provide the only entertainment I had!
Even when I forced her, she refused make a single sound.
She refused to communicate with me.
She was coming between me and friends, family...
I coaxed her, ordered her, requested her..no avail.
I checked throughout her body and mind...no chance..
It is a virus attack....

Lost in dreams

My days whither away like leaves in winter,
My thoughts are misty having no center.
Smiles and sorrows burried deep in my face,
Dreams and tears etching lines marking every phase
I am trying to grasp every moment
In vain I find I can only lament
What am I afraid of?
Losing my dreams-
Or losing myself in my dreams.

Terrorism

I am compelled to write this post after the London blasts. It is always saddening to note that common people are the ones who take the brunt of this monstrocity. I still remember coimbatore blasts and remember asking, what did that lady do to get her legs blown off. On the other side of the coin, it is just news to us when we hear innocent iraqi civilians die to accidental misfire on the part of American troops. Life is life everywhere and suffering remains same. On a broader perspective, is this a fight between cultures or is it a fight between ideologies or is this all in some screwed up way part of evolution of our society? I dont know, but the fact remains that we have become quite proficient in destroying ourselves. And finally this is all I can think of, No cause is worth a single life.

Laundry Laments

From the time I came to US, laundry has been my number one enemy. It always seems expensive, time consuming, irritating and however much i wash my clothes, i seem to have insufficient clean ones. My laundry cycle is close to 30 days. Believe me, I have way too much of clothes (summer, winter, fall, house, formal, whites, sleeping etc etc). How I manage them is for another polambal blog. But now the crisis is I have stuff left for only one more day. I absolutely hate wearing clothers i have worn once, before washing. My roomies always give me the look (what?!!??!!) whenever they come with me for laundry. It used to be so nice in india when my mom used to take care of this petty matter. When i was talking about this problem of immense importance, my friend cooly said "unga ammava ponnu parka sollu"..hmmm yaravadhu moota poochiku bayandhu veeta koluthuvangala?....

My past life

sudhish post parthutu indha website poenen.....so, since i was a citizen of burma, i demand them to release aang san su chi....
My past life diagnosis:
I don't know how you feel about it, but you were male in your last earthly incarnation. You were born somewhere in the territory of modern Burma around the year 1525.Your profession was that of a seaman, dealer, businessman or broker.
Your brief psychological profile in your past life:As a natural talent in psychology, you knew how to use your opportunities. Cold-blooded and calm in any situation.
The lesson that your last past life brought to your present incarnation:Your task is to learn determination and persistency. Youd should not allow to let misfortunes take influence on your strong will.
Do you remember now?

Senthamizh yaarukavadhu theriyuma?

My sister wants to name her girl child in tamil and is currently searching for good tamil names. anybody got any guess or any sources where i can search. only condition - tamizh, malar and selvi should not be in the name (it is so typical!!!).....my suggestion was agananooru, purananooru, thirukural, yetuthogai..etc..to which my sister was inspired to call me by some names i cant publish here....

Whore

I was reading the commets sections of surya's post on malika. ioiio has said she looked like a whore these days. Nothing against ioiio or for malika (this post is not even about her hehehehe), but the word "whore" seems derogatory to the core of feminity. Though it is recognised as the oldest profession in the world why are women still pushed to this crap and then made to take on the blame too. Nobody says anything about the guys who go to her. We dont even have a term for these people who go to sex workers. Even if a women is a "whore" should not the guy be more stigmatized than her.....long way to equality, i guess.

Be the change you want to bring - Gandhi

I was asked to comment on this post about Illayaraja's TIS ("Thiruvasagam in Symphony"). I disagree with the post completely. I feel if I agree I will be a hypocrite. Firstly, thiruvasagam was there for everyone, so is the music, and so is the symphony. Why cant anybody do what he Illayaraja has done? Since it was his composition, his brain that did the work he has right to decide who can and cannot hear it. I dont see any foul play in this. I dont understand the poor people and their plight in all this. How does TIS change anything?

Less than 2% of the world's population have access to internet and we say it is open to all? No. Somebody pays for everything somewhere. Nothing in this world is free and it should not be free. Saying that music is expensive is something but saying that piracy is ok is entirely another thing.

If one is so concerned about poor, then may be keep only the basic needs satisfies and donate the rest to poor.
