May be a little late now, but what the heck!

One of my friends asked me, if we got independence due to Gandhi and non-violence. He went on to say that independence was achieved due to violent outbursts and fighting due to people like bhagat sigh, mangal pandey(!), and subash chandra bose. I could not quite agree. He said british had guns and they were able to rule us. Only way we got/could have gotten and to get independence is through a fitting reply in kind. Call me old fashioned, but somehow I disagree. I certainly refuse to believe that we got independence due to violence and violence is a way to permenent solution - in this case independence. I m no great fan of Gandhi, I know relatively little about him. Definitely what is taught in schools is not enough to get a good picture. I respect him though, but then leaving that aside, my question is how can violence be taken as a cure/solution to our problems? Does is mean we have not learnt to live peacefully? If then, are we truely civilized? Or like my other friend claims, we have inherent ability to fight amongst ourselves. Not sure. But very disturbing if it is true.
I still keep on saying to myself everytime I hear about war and blood and pain, "After everything is said and done, I still believe in humanity". Sometimes such believes are shaken.

Comments:
welcoem back, wonderin wat happ.
humanity exists, but to what extent i am not sure, tsunami get tonnes of AID wheres dafur get minimual, is it selective amnesia??but the trend seems that there is no respect for human life, look at the number of killings and how casually people kill, maybe we are shocked because we have access to such informatio now, something we didnt have earlier.

Violence + non-violence aka, Gandhi Karate, IMHO got us independence.

That said, we've forgotten so many stars who fought for our Independence.

hmmm..that is the wonder of faith and hope, they can be shaken but not totally removed..so keep beleiving in humanity!
:D

Why are Indians so meak and weak. Chota bangladeshis shoot at us. We take it in our arse and sit tight doing noting saying non-violence.
How much kashmir is actually ours. How much of Himachal PRadesh is actually ours. The price of non-violence. Can anybody take a pek of land from US ?
Y..fear..the fear...that action brings about. Don't fight unncesarily, but fight for urs rights. Earnestly. Unfortunatly Gandhi set a very bad example.

I know, I know and I completely understand...
@venkat sir, true, but then even the most famous and greatest leaders are forgotten and questioned now...
@monu, I will try :-)
@prabhakar, tx for visiting. Agreed fear keeps lot of things outside. But I am not talking about india, US, geographical boundaries. We created them. Finally everything is dust to dust and ashes to ashes. I might sound a bit of a dreamer, but guess it will make a lot of sense if we understand we have just one , fragile blue ball - earth. And the greatest wonder life. But then, lot of things dont make sense anymore.

...and to solve problems, both sides must believe in Non Violence.

I agree with Narayanan Sir...Its a collective success... Like a Cricket team, it requires a pinch hitter, a sheath anchor, a great bowler...to win a match...

We cannot say that we won because of one single person.

It takes a really elevated mind to appreciate non-violence. It is certainly not a cowardly weapon.Going back in time a bit, why did we need to fight for our independence in the first place? Because it was squandered by petty kings squabbling amongst themselves and calling in the british to help--which of course the latter took advantage of! In the movie Lagaan, this tendency is symbolised by the carpenter Lakha who wants aamir khan to lose the match bec then he thins he will get the heroine---so he sabotages the game by eing part of the team. This traitorous streak is as much a part of the Indian psyche as valour is. Sad but true.
